Keeping Your Data Safe
Years of family photos.
Text documents and spreadsheets.
Important data from your tax software.
But is your information safe and protected if your harddrive were to suddenly fail?
The Principle of Multiple Backups
For backups to be effective means there are multiple copies of a certain data in at least two storage places, that way if one storage fails, the data will still be accessible from the other. You can then restorethat backed-up data to your new system or backup.
It is not, however, unheard of for freak occurences of separate hardware failing at the same time, for example if your computer and external harddrive are fried by the same electrical surge, or are caught in the same water from flooding. Thus storing some or all important data online can be an additional useful protective measure. (See below.)
Storage Options
With the rise of cloud storage, a lot of your info can be kept on multiple remote servers, providing assurance against their being lost in one catastrophic hardware failure. However, not all cloud solutions are equally reliable, and the safest method is to have multiple backups, including your own hardware backups that you will never lose access to by forgetting passwords, losing internet, or ceasing to pay for an online storage service.
External harddrives are very affordable and can be set up to automatically back up certain data, or you can manually make your own backups by copying files onto the harddrive.
Data Transfers
When you want old info put onto a new device, it can be confusing. We make it easy and handle it for you, whether it’s your old photos, music, email, tax software data, office documents, etc. See our New PC Setup page for more info. Note: Programs cannot be transferred between computers, but must be reinstalled individually.
Data Restoration
Sometimes when a harddrive fails mechanically, seemingly inaccessible information can still be salvaged. Special programs can be run to check for good data still hidden in between damaged data or corrupted filesystems. This doesn’t always work however, and sometimes data can only be salvaged by specialized companies for thousands of dollars, or cannot be saved at all. If you have important data that you’re afraid is lost, contact us and we’ll be able to tell you if we can save it, or direct you to a company that can.
Recycling and Data Destruction
We can handle destruction and removal of old harddrives. Or you can take a hammer and do it yourself!
